What It Is, Who Needs It, and Why Adults Shouldn't Skip This One
Most Filipinos know vaccines are important for children. Far fewer know that some of the most critical vaccines are for adults — and one of the most overlooked is the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.
Vaxcen carries PCV20, the most comprehensive pneumococcal vaccine available. Here's what it does, who needs it, and how to get it.
What is PCV20?
PCV20 is a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine that protects against 20 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae — the bacteria responsible for pneumonia, meningitis, and serious bloodstream infections.
It is an upgrade from earlier versions: PCV13 covered 13 strains, PCV15 covers 15. PCV20 covers all of those plus additional strains, offering the broadest single-dose protection currently available.
Pneumococcal disease is one of the leading causes of serious illness in Filipino adults, especially those over 60 and people with underlying health conditions. It is also vaccine-preventable.
PCV20 vs PCV15 — what's the difference?
Both are available at Vaxcen. Here's a simple comparison:
PCV15 covers 15 pneumococcal strains — a strong, reliable option for pneumococcal protection.
PCV20 covers 20 pneumococcal strains — the broadest coverage available in a single dose, reducing or eliminating the need for additional pneumococcal vaccines.
For most adults who have not previously received a pneumococcal vaccine, PCV20 is the recommended option. If you've previously received PCV13 or Pneumococcal 23, the Vaxcen team can advise on whether an updated dose makes sense for your situation.

Who should get PCV20?
PCV20 is recommended for:
Adults 65 years and older
Adults 19 to 64 years old with diabetes, chronic heart disease, chronic lung disease, liver disease, kidney disease, or those who smoke
Adults who have never received any pneumococcal vaccine
Adults who received an older version and may benefit from updated, broader coverage
Is it a one-time vaccine?
For most adults, PCV20 is a single dose. Your vaccination history may influence the recommendation — our team will walk you through this before your injection.
What to expect after vaccination
Side effects are generally mild: soreness at the injection site, fatigue, or a slight fever within the first 24 to 48 hours. These resolve on their own and are a normal immune response.
